"Mind Meld" Provides Rare Glimpse Into Trek
by Thomas Williams

"Mind Meld", a documentary DVD produced by William Shatner, gives a
rare, humorous and sometimes deeply personal look into two prominent
actor's lives, memories and their history with Star Trek.

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, friends since the original Star
Trek hit the airwaves in 1966, speak with open and unique candor
about their past.

Set in Nimoy's plush Los Angeles yard, two lawn chairs serve as
their stage-- their unrehearsed dialogue the only script. If you
are like many fans, and enjoy listening to what really goes on behind
the scenes, you will love "Mind Meld".

The first few minutes begin formally-- Shatner asks questions as
the interviewer, Nimoy responding. Soon, the tables are turned,
as Nimoy asks his own questions of the man behind Captain Kirk.

These two long time friends seem to forget the cameras are there
after a time, and this is where the real treat for fans begins.

The two explore death, their goals, one man's need to constantly
seek new success, while another is content not to direct or act
ever again. A discussion is even included about (the reported) resentment
some other Trek actors have had for William Shatner, and how he
has faced death and divorce.

Both men are remarkable in this DVD, not shying away from admission
of past vices and indiscretions. (Nimoy speaks of alcolohism, and
Shatner of his many relationships during the run of Star Trek).

Revealed are how these men felt about Gene Roddenberry, the creator
of Star Trek, and their relationship with the Hollywood studios.
(Nimoy even admits going into therapy over the latter!)

Running seventy-five minutes, "Mind Meld" is worthy of any Trek
fans time. Don't watch it half-way...sit down and really listen.
You'll learn some things you never knew before, and get a rare
look at possibly the best known Trek actors of all
time.
